The relation of Mediterranean diet and health

Regarding healty nutrition and health, there is a deep interest all around the world during the recent years. Research on the one in five British men and one in seven women have a problem from coronary heart disease in UK and their costs are approximately 77 billion GBP to the National Health Service. The reason of this issue is difference of diet, Southern Europe has this disease more than Northern Europe.

Mediterranean Diet was mentioned at Fishmongers’ Conference in London at the beginning of November. According to Dr. Katharina Greathead, deaths of coronary health disease is reducing day by day but there are still 2,7 million people have this illness.

Coronary health disease can be seen at the young ages and there won’t be any outward signs on the body. It can be emphasized that the importance of what people eat and dietary changes. Not only the variety of fat consumed that caused for these problems, but also the balance between the Omega 3 fat acids and Omega 6 fat acids, with olive oil. These kind of products are part of Mediterranean Diet. The consumption of Omega 3 is well known for the health.

The highest level of Omega 3 fat acids are found in predator fish according to Tom Sanders from Kings’ College London. For example, 140 gr. mackerel portion has 4,5 gr polyunsaturated acids. Another important point is the type of fish and the type of serving. For instance, grilled fiah is much more healthier than fried fish, salted fish affected the blood pressure etc..

In addition to statements of Sanders, the catch area of fish is significant.   He is mentioned that both Mediterranean and Baltic Seas have human pollution due to “low turnover of water.”

According to Sanders, to eat fish regularly on Fridays’, which is traditional way,  is simple and effective to protect the health.  Mediterranean Diet has more Omega 3 than provided by fish. Especially Crete Cuisine , which is original Mediterranean Diet.

Prof. Julie Lovegrove, from Cardiovascular and Metabolic Research Institute, says that mono saturated fat acids from olive oil and rapeseed oil are important elements.

The consumption of cheese and milk at Mediterranean countries affects thehigh blood pressure risks. Mediterranean Diet is very complex  but to reduce the trans fats influence health in a positive way.

Dr. Greathead says that Mediterranean Diet is good for reducing coronary heart disease incidences. Fish and shellfish are important for preventing this kind of illness.
